Antequera region

The capital of the Antequera region is the city of Antequera itself. The region is located on a plain, with some hills and ridges and has been an important communications centre for Malaga since ancient times due to its location.

The A-92 road passes through Antequera in the direction of Granada, Seville and Almeria, as well as the A-42 in the direction of Cordoba. There is also the Antequera – Santa Ana high-speed train station, on the line from Malaga to Cordoba and Madrid.

In all the municipalities you will find churches of great architectural and historical value, as well as other monuments. However, we must highlight the Dolmens. The Site Dolmens of Antequera is a cultural asset made up of five monuments located in the municipality of Antequera.

Do you like nature and animals? Then you might want to visit the Lobo Park (Wolf park) where you might be able to watch some living in their habitat. There are special events throughout the year and sometimes it is even possible visiting them at night.

Also if you are looking for active holiday activities you will find in some of the municipalities of the region some things to do; from rafting to canoying and guided hiking. Cuevas Bajas is a good place to start, but you can also visit other of the many municipalities in the region.

If you are interested in gastronomy we recommend you try migas, porra antequerana or gazpacho. The latter two are ideal for the summer season, as they are refreshing drinks made of local fresh ingredients.

Fuente de Piedra is well known for its lagoon, where the pink flamingo breeds. It has one of the most important flamingo populations in Europe. There are more to see here however, as there is one of the few donkey sanctuaries in Andalucia.

If you visit us around the month of August and would like to see a traditional fair, we recommend you visit the Villanueva de la Concepción Fair, which takes place around the same time and although smaller than Malaga Fair, but it is definitely worth a visit.

Fuente de Piedra

Fuente de Piedra Lagoon is the biggest in Andalucia and is the perfect place for spooting one of the highest populations of pink flamingoes in Europe. This town is just 17 kilometres from Antequera city.
