Viñuela
The town of La Viñuela, known as "the
oasis of La Axarquía" is situated at
the junction between two of the most important roads
in the province: The Alhama Road and the Casabermeja
Road. With a population of about 1.250 inhabitants,
the landscape of its municipal district is composed
of big olive groves and cereal fields, apart from
the new reservoir of La Viñuela.
The population centre, know as "la viñuela"
for having a small vineyard in its surrounding area,
arose from a Sixteenth Century country inn. Despite
being the most modern town of la Axarquía,
its lands were one of the first ones in the whole
of the district to be inhabited, as shown by the numerous
archaeological remains found, the oldest of which
date from the Mid- Paleolithic Age.
Its most interesting monuments are the Parosh Church
of San José, which dates from the Sixteenth
Century; The Shrine of La Virgen de las Angustias
and the tower of la Atalaya, which dates from Arabic
times.
La Viñuela celebrates un September its traditional
"Feria de la Pasa", one of the most interesting
in the whole of the administrative district. Furthermore,
its traditional romeria takes place in mid- May.
Tomato soups, cold vegetable soup with potatoes and
vegetable stews are very typical, especially during
the winter months. More fitting of summertime are
the fried breadcrumbs with orange and pomegranate,
the cold garlic and almond soup, the cold Andalucian
soup and the orange and cod salad.
