Velez Malaga
Velez Malaga consists of three main areas: Torre del
Mar on the Coast; the main town Velez-Malaga itself,
situated strategically inland to escape tidal waves
caused by earthquakes centuries ago and Velez Costa
consisting of several smaller resorts east of Torre
del Mar ,Caleta de Velez, Benajarafe and Mezquitilla.
Communications between the towns are good. There are
two local bus services: one connecting Torre del Mar
with Velez Malaga every 30 minutes and the other connects
the resorts within Velez along the coast.
Velez Malaga is the capital of the Axarquía,
its largest town and main services centre for the
east side of Malaga. The town is an attractive white
town set in the foot hills of the Maroma mountain,
one of the highest in the area and it is often snow-capped
in the winter. The Moorish castle and church dominate
the town and there are several other important monuments.
The town is busy and essentially Spanish. Velez-Malaga
was the birthplace of Maria zambrano, a nationally
famous writer and philosopher, and the town is home
to the Zambrano Foundation where many archives and
original documents are kept.
Location
Situated to the south- east of the province of Málaga,
Vélez is a town that has more than 20 kilometres
of coastline and a mild climate that makes the town
into a pleasant destination for a peaceful vacation.
Its hotel offers are made up of as much of deep countryside
installations in order to enjoy the rural environment,
as of the excellent installations of the maritime
yachting arbour of La Caleta.
Sights
The age- old tradition of Vélez- Málaga
still prevails amongst its narrow and winding streets
of the district of La Villa, the city´s original
town centre. In its interior we can find some interesting
examples of Mudejar Art, like "La Casa Cervantes",
the Church of "Santa María de la Encarnación"
or the coffered ceiling of the Palace of "El
Marqués de Beniel".
Vélez- Málaga has various important
Phoenician sites, of which can be highlighted "La
Necrópolis de Cerro del Mar y Jardín",
or the remains found in "Lagos y Caleta de Vélez".
The festive calendar of Vélez is full of feasts
and fairs, amongst which can be highlighted "La
Real Feria de San Miguel", at the end of September,
and the Fair of Santiago and Santa Ana in July.
Gastronomy
The most demanding of taste- buds will find in the
veleña gastronomy a wide variety of typical
dishes: calabash stew, pap, cold garlic and almond
soup, "la sopa cachorreña" or "los
maimones" make up only a sample of its wide
gastronomic offer, to which we have to add the tasty
confectionery that the cloister nuns make in their
kitchens. All this, without forgetting the typical
variety of fried fish or "espetos de sardines".
On the other hand, Torre del Mar offers the visitor
a great variety of activities to carry out.
