Nerja
Tourist capital of La Axarquía, is set in the
eastern limit of the province, at 50 kilometres from
Málaga. With a mild climate, it is possible
to enjoy its charms during the whole year: from the
peacefulness of the town, which maintains all the
flavour of its Moorish past, to its offers of boarding
and leisure, passing through its nine kilometres of
beaches (from the known Burriana to the small, virgin
coves of Los Acantilados de Maro), gifted with modern
services; Nerja is, at the present time, as much a
destination for visitors looking for sun and peace
as for numerous artists who have set up residence
here.
Sights
Its historic centres starts from "El Balcón
de Europa", ancient castle from the Ninth Century
and nowadays, view- point or balcony over the sea.
In the "Boquete de Calahonda", "El
Paseo de Carabineros", a beautiful pathway set
deep in a natural setting of rocks that runs along
the coast until the beach of Burriana. The Shrine
of "Ntra. Sra. De las Angustias", with
paintings of the maestro, Alonso Cano, and the Church
of El Salvador, from the Seventeenth Century and of
Mudejar- baroque styling, complete the catalogue of
its buildings of historical interest. Furthermore,
the old quarter of the city offers the possibility
of going shopping to the traditional shops which offer
that craftsmanship and the typical products of the
place.
The town has several famous beaches, including Burriana
beach and is home to the world-famous Nerja caves.
Festivities
Nerja maintains alive its traditions: the fair, Holy
Week, "la Romería de San Isidro",
the feast day of San Juan or the festivity of "La
Virgen del Carmen" are celebrated in a special
way. Of its cultural offer, one needs to highlight
the festival of "La Cueva de Nerja", celebrated
amongst the stalactites and the stalagmites of this
Bien de Interes Cultural, which, at present, is the
third most visited monument in Spain.
Restaurants
As far as food is concerned, one can enjoy as much
the wide offer of international restaurants as its
classical snack- bar and seafood restaurants in which
to sample the fried fish.
