Guaro
Situated at a little over 40 kms from Malaga, Guaro
is the doorway to the Parque Natural Sierra de las
Nieves, considered by the UNESCO as Reserva de la
Biosfera. It is a town with steep and narrow streets,
a legacy from its Arabic past. With a population of
2.000 inhabitants, it is a splendid starting point
to embark on numerous routes through mountainous landscapes,
ideal for the practice of various sports. Within its
district, the highest peak in the province and one
of the deepest caves in the world can be found.
The origins of the town date back to the Paleolithic
Era. It was inhabited by both Romans and Arabs, civilizations
that left traces of their presence in Ardite, El Polvillar
and in the settlement of Guaro El Viejo. In 1648,
the country of Guaro is created; a country town by
the privilege decreed upon by King Felipe IV. Interesting
places to be visited are the Parish Church of San
Miguel built in 1505, and the Shrines of El Sanctuario
de la Cruz del Puerto, and of San Isidro.
The town's Patron Saint is La Inmaculada Concepción
and Las Mayordomas is celebrated in her honour on
the 7th and 8th of December. In mid-May, the Romería
of San Isidro takes place and in August, the main
festivities of the town. In order to make the native
products of its cuisine, Guaro knows how to mix the
traditional with the technical; hence, all the derivates
of the almond: tortas, bocaditos, mantecadas and roscos,
are significant and of great renown.
