Colmenar
Peaceful and hospitable town with a population of
a little more than 3.000 inhabitants is known as the
capital of Los Montes de Málaga. Its character
of being a place "of transit" has always
marked its history: the Neolithic Cultures whose remains
can be found in "La Cueva de las Pulseras",
passed through here; the Pre- roman and Roman; those
of the rebellious Umar B. Hafsun; Los Reyes Católicos;
the French troops; and, lastly, the discoverers of
the tourist trade potential of La Costa del Sol.
Its historical- artistic heritage has two main references:
the Church of "Ntra. Sra. De la Asunción",
from the Sixteenth Century; and the Shrine, built
in the Seventeenth Century.
Colmenar celebrates various festivities of interest
throughout the year: The August Fair, the feast of
"El Mosto y la Chacina" and its local
festivities, during the first week in February, in
honour of its Patron Saint, "La Virgen de la
Candelaria".
The gastronomy of Colmenar is rich and varied, highlighting
some of its dishes: "el plato de los Montes",
snails (caracoles), "el gazpacho de tres ramales".
Special word of mention must be given to the pork
cold cuts, the typical cakes: "roscos caseros"
and "milhojas", and the local must and
wines.
