Benamocarra
Well connected with the rest of the towns of La Axarquía,
Benamocarra has a population of 3.000 inhabitants
and amongst its most famous sons is Eduardo Ocón,
one of the great masters of Spanish music. Its appearance
is the same as that of the other towns in the administrative
district, in which there is an abundance of whitewashed
facades and narrow and steep alleys.
One of the towns most popular legend is related to
its Patron Saint, "El Cristo de la Salud",
and as legend has it, saved the inhabitants from a
cholera epidemic which spread throughout the area
but never surpassed the town's threshold. At
present, its statue is found in the Chapel of "El
Santo Chiquito".
The main architectural reference is the Parish Church
of Santa Ana, hailing from the Sixteenth Century,
and amongst its main festivities is the one that takes
place on the third weekend in October, in honour of
"El Santísimo Cristo de la Salud".
Furthermore, it is worth noting "La Romería
de San Isidro", celebrated on the 15th May,
and the Feast of La Candelaria, on the 7th and 8th
of September.
Those wishing to know its gastronomy, have to taste
"Las Coles Moreá", apart from the
chickpea stews with haricot beans and Swiss chard,
the cold garlic and almond soup, "la sopa de
maimones" and the cold vegetable soup fried
with flour and vinegar.
Amongst its most noteworthy confectionery are its
doughnuts made form cold vegetable soup fried with
flour and vinegar.
